Maintenance of your device

Of course you want to prevent unpleasant smells and skin infections. Proper maintenance of your corrective helmet or prosthetic leg is therefore important. In addition to cleaning your device, keeping your skin clean is also very important. Your prosthetist will provide you with advice on use and maintenance when your device is delivered.

How to maintain your prosthetic socket?

A clean prosthetic socket is important to prevent unpleasant smells and skin irritations. It is best to clean the socket every day with lukewarm water and, if necessary, a pH-neutral soap. Rinse the socket thoroughly to ensure all soap residue is removed. After washing, dry the socket well! It is recommended to clean the socket in the evening so it can dry properly. You can also clean the socket with 70% alcohol. Always ask your prosthetist or rehabilitation doctor for advice and report any skin issues immediately!

How to maintain your stump sock and liners?

Clean stump socks are important to prevent skin irritations and infections! Just like clean socks, you should wear fresh stump socks every day. Wash your stump socks by hand or in the washing machine at a maximum of 40°C with a neutral detergent, without fabric softener. Your liner also needs to be properly cleaned. Clean your liner daily with water and a pH-neutral soap. Rinse the liner thoroughly and let it dry. You will find the washing instructions on the packaging of the stump socks and liners.

Maintenance of cranial helmets

How to maintain a cranial helmet?

The helmet should be cleaned daily. This can be done during the two half-hour periods each day when the helmet doesn’t need to be worn — half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening. Use only an unscented, alcohol-based disinfectant for cleaning the interior of the helmet. Other products may be harmful to the skin. Clean with a new cloth or a soft brush. Afterward, dry the helmet thoroughly. You can also use a hairdryer on a low heat setting to dry the helmet. Properly drying the helmet will also help reduce any smells.

How to care for your baby’s scalp?

Wash your baby’s head daily with shampoo. Put the helmet back on once your baby’s head and the cleaned helmet are dry. If your baby has sensitive skin, it’s best to use a hypoallergenic or natural shampoo. The helmet should not get wet and must also be removed during bathing.

Your baby may sweat excessively during the first few days until they get used to wearing the helmet. In the beginning, it may be necessary to remove the helmet for a few minutes regularly and dry both your baby’s head and the helmet with a towel or a hairdryer on a low setting. Put the dry helmet back on immediately after.

Always check the skin after removing the helmet. If there is redness, skin damage or irritation, contact your prosthetist immediately.
